Even though you don't realize that you are Buddha,
既然大家還不了解 自己是佛
I see you all as Buddhas,
我看你們都是佛
because we are all one. We are all one.
因為我們同一體 我們都一樣
We are like a drop in the ocean.
我們像每一滴水 在大海裡面
Every drop is special.
既然每一滴都是特別的
Every drop is unique.
每一滴都是個人的
But the drop is the ocean as well.
不過每一滴也是大海
所以我們不是陌生的人
So we are not strangers.
而且有時候 我有聽說
Also I hear everybody says,
大家都說師父回國了
Master is coming back home to Formosa. She's been away for a long time and has now returned home.
她好久出國了 現在又回國了
我就覺得自己是台灣人
I feel like I am Taiwanese.
昨天好像看到 一點點電視報導
Yesterday I watched the news for a little while.
我從那個浴室跑出來 抓到最後那個新聞
I ran out of the bathroom to catch the final part.
它說甚麼清海某某回國了
It said, "Supreme Master Ching Hai is returning home to Formosa."
我聽了好感動
I heard it and was touched.
好像大家接受我 像自己的人一樣
It seems like everyone treats me like family.

Thank you. Thank you very much.
我們如果要知道 自己同一體的話
If we want to know that we are one,
真正的要知道的
we want to truly know it and
不是說聽說 不是說感覺到
not just hear it from someone or feel it,
而且要真正知道
we have to really know it.
要真正知道的話 不難
If you want to really know it, it's not difficult.
我們佛家就說：
Buddha once said,
『放下屠刀，立刻成佛』
Put down the butcher's knife and become Buddha in an instant.
不是說我們應該等到 放下屠刀才可以成佛
It doesn't mean that, we should wait until we put down the knife to become Buddha.
我們不用
We don't have to wait for that.
我們只要反過來 『反聞聞自性』
We only have to turn inward and "listen inwardly to our Inner Nature,"
馬上就會看到自己的佛性
then we will find our own Buddha Nature in an instant.
我們看經典很多 都知道『反聞聞自性』
We read many scriptures and know we should "listen inwardly to our Inner Nature,
就不知道怎麼『反聞』 為什麼要『反聞』？
but we don't know how and why.
為什麼不說『反看』
Why don't we say 'look' inwardly
或是『反摸』 或是『反感覺』？
or 'touch' or 'feel' inwardly?
而且『反聞』
Why do we say 'listen' inwardly?
因為真正的我們 可以聞到
Because we can really listen,
聞到不是說用耳朵聞的 而且用自己的內心
not with our ears, but with our inner heart.
真正也可以聞自性
We can listen inwardly to our Inner Nature.
為什麼說『聞』呢？
But why do we say that?
因為會有音樂
Because there is music.
會有佛經、會有佛法
There is Buddha's scripture and Buddha's teaching.
會有內在的、天上的 一種像音樂一樣，那麼美麗
There is inner heavenly music. So beautiful!
就是這種音樂 我們不需要外表的樂器
We don't need material musical instruments to play this music.
像各位剛才有欣賞
Just now you all enjoyed the performance of
我們同修還有音樂家 一起合奏、合唱
our disciples and the musicians who sang and played together.
這個外表的音樂
This external music
我們應該用樂器 才能夠弄出來聲音
needs material musical instruments.
就是內邊 當我們聞到自己內心的時候
But if we want to listen to the inner music,
就不用樂器
there is no need for these material musical instruments.
而且聲音更美麗、更奧妙
The sound is more beautiful and wonderful.
然後讓我們的靈魂 就飄…飄…飄…飄…
It elevates our soul.
高興快樂回來本土 像佛土或是天堂
Then we can happily go back to Buddha's land or heaven.
所以佛祖才說 要反聞聞自性
That's why Buddha said we have to listen to our Inner Nature.
我們的自性不是說一顆心 也不是說一種什麼品質
Our nature is not this heart, it's not a kind of quality.
就是一種自由自在
It's a free nature,
非常有智慧
very wise,
非常高貴 非常偉大
very noble, very great,
整個宇宙都可以包含的
and accommodates the whole universe.
這個就是我們的自性
This is our own Inner Nature.
我們坐這樣子 看起來像凡夫的人一樣
We sit like this, and look like ordinary people,
就是我們眼睛一閉起來
but once we close our eyes
知道在那裡聞佛性的時候
and know how to listen to our Inner Nature,
我們馬上可以聞到 這個佛性
then we can listen to this Inner Nature immediately.
所以釋迦牟尼佛才說： 『我們都有佛性』
So Sakyamuni Buddha said, "Everybody has Buddha Nature."
耶穌也說： 『天堂是在你內邊』
Jesus also said, "The kingdom of God is within you."
是上帝住在 我們這個寺廟裡面
God dwells in this temple.
既然我們都是這樣子聽說
Even though we all hear that,
不過如果我們沒有 真正的這種體驗的話
without real experiences
我們的生活 還是馬馬虎虎這樣子過去
our life is just mediocre,
沒有改變
with no changes.
沒有更增加的智慧 沒有更增加的能力
We don't develop our wisdom, we don't better our ability,
沒有可以想到很多 奧妙的方法
and we can't find a better way
可以處理我們家庭的 還有社會的、四周圍的
to solve our family, social
很多種種的問題
and various problems.
在聖經有說：
The Bible says, "Seek you first the Kingdom of God
我們先找到天國 然後所有東西都會來給我們
and all other things shall be added unto you."
釋迦牟尼佛也有說
And Sakyamuni Buddha said,
我們找到佛性了以後
Find your Buddha Nature first.
即使我們的凡夫的生活
Even if we are lay people, our life will become happier
也會更增加快樂、更成功
and more successful and our material lives
連物質的方面也會更興榮
will be more prosperous.
不是因為我們找佛性
The purpose of finding our Buddha Nature
為了要生活舒服
is not to seek a more comfortable life.
不過我們也會 很舒服、很快樂
After finding our Buddha Nature, we will feel comfortable and happy.
因為佛性找到了以後 任何所有的都照亮
Everything will be bright.
我們的才華 我們的以前所有忘記的才華
All our forgotten latent talents,
我們的已經睡眠的智慧
our sleeping wisdom,
我們好久不知道有的能力
forgotten ability,
統統全部都會和佛性 一起起來、一起發展
everything will develop together with our Buddha Nature.
我們變成一個不同的人
Then we change into another person.
因為從那個時候 我們不是人了
From that time we are not ordinary people anymore
我們本來就不是人了
because originally we are not ordinary people.

在我們進去了這個身體以後 我們才說我們是『人』
When we enter this body, we call ourselves human.
我們還沒有進去 這個身體的時候
But before we entered this body,
我們是誰呢？
what were we?
然後我們出去、離開 這個身體的時候
And after we leave this flesh body,
我們又是誰？
what will we be?
這樣子問一問 就知道我們本來就不是凡夫
As we ask this question we know we are not ordinary people.
就是因為進去 這個肉體了以後
It is just because after entering this fleshly body,
我們所有的智慧 所有的快樂的
we forget all our wisdom, all our happiness
所有的超越的能力 都被忘記了
and our supreme power.
我們忘記 因為我們都是太忙
We are too busy
太忙看東看西 看所有的世界的變化
looking at the changes in this material world.
還有被天天生活 生存必須要的綁住我們
We are bound by our daily obligations,
讓我們身體、精神很疲倦
so our body and spirit feel exhausted.
為了要生存
We are preoccupied with our material needs
為了要有足夠飯菜 足夠衣服
such as food and clothing.
這個不是我們來這邊 真正的目的
This is not the purpose of our coming to this world.
不過這個世界 這個世界既然是幻想
This world is but an illusion
不過它很厲害
which is very powerful.
它可以把我們全部的 精神、體力、注意力
It exhausts all our energy
抓住在這裡
and grabs our attention
連我們本來就是佛 能讓我們統統一乾二淨忘記
so that we completely forget we are originally Buddha.
既然我們天天有看佛經說
We read Buddha's scriptures every day and they say
我們都有佛性
we all have Buddha Nature.
釋迦牟尼佛也說 祂跟我們平等
And Sakyamuni Buddha said, "He and we are equal."
祂是佛已經成了 我們是當來的佛可以成
He's already become Buddha, and so will we.
祂也說所有眾生 跟祂一樣有佛性
He said all beings have the Buddha Nature like Himself.
為什麼不知道 祂自己也問自己
He also asked Himself why the beings didn't realize this.
因為這個魔王 這個世界的幻想
Because the illusion of this Maya world
真的太…太奧妙了
is really great.
讓我們完全、一點點 都不記得我們是誰
It makes us completely forget who we are.
不記得天堂的家鄉 不記得佛土
We forget heaven, our homeland, the Buddha's land.
不過我們要記得的話 還好很簡單，很簡單
But it's simple to recall it. Very simple!
我常常講過了
I often say
這麼簡單 跟這隻手翻過來而已
it is as simple as turning your hand over,
或是跟從前面往到後面看
or as looking from the front to the back.
這樣子這麼簡單
It's that simple.
簡單，不過不簡單
But again, it's not simple.
不簡單
Not simple.
因為我們如果常常往外面看
Because we often look outside into the material world
然後習慣
and get used to it
所以很難能夠相信我們是佛
so it's difficult for us to believe we are Buddha.
然後聽說是天堂、佛土
We hear something about heaven, Buddha's land,
佛在心、上帝在內
about Buddha in our heart, and God within us.
不過聽說是聽說而已
This we hear only.
明天還是一樣 匆匆忙忙過一個凡夫的生活
Tomorrow we carry on with the hustle-bustle of our ordinary life.
既然過這樣也好
It's also OK.
不過死亡的時候 沒有人帶路
But when we die, there is no one to guide us
不知道去那裡 靈魂也是很痛苦
and we don't know where to go; then our soul will feel tortured.
在世的時候太匆匆忙忙 為了身體
While living we are too busy
浪費很多時間 花了很多精神和體力
spending too much time and energy on our physical body.
沒有一個理想 沒有那個補充的能量
We have no spiritual ideal or rechargeable energy,
所以身體、精神也是很痛苦
so our body and mind suffer.
不是說我們要過一個 普通的、簡單的生活也不好
I'm not saying it's no good to have a simple and ordinary life.
好 好
It's good! It's good!
不過，我們不是過一個 簡單的生活而已就夠好了
But it's not enough to lead a simple life,
因為我們太痛苦
because we are too tormented.
如果沒有找到自己 真正的本來面目的話
If we can't find our true self,
不管做什麼 不管擁有多少
no matter what we do or have,
不會完全快樂 不會永恆覺得滿足
we will never feel completely happy or contented.
這是因為我們把假弄成真的
This is because we mistake the false for the real.
我們把這個幻想的世界
We take this illusionary world
當成一個唯一的 一個不可沒有的世界
as the one and only.
然後我們依靠它
And then we rely on it,
我們跟著它走 隨它的那個要求
follow it and fulfill its demands.
我們的身體、精神很疲倦
Our mind and body are exhausted,
也裝不了什麼多少
so we can't recharge ourselves with much energy.
即使為了身體 也有時候不夠
Sometimes it's even not enough for our body.
因為我們做事比較顛倒
We do things upside down
我們忘記了
because we have forgotten our own nature.
我們要開車的話 應該要知道鑰匙在那裏開
If we want to drive, we should know where to put key to get it started,
油門在那裏
where the gas pedal and...

How to say "brake" in Chinese?
好久沒講中文，忘了！
I haven't spoken Chinese for a long time! I forgot.
Break停車那個
Brake, the word for stopping the car.
煞車，對！對！對！
Yes! That's right.

煞車在哪裏
And where the brake is.
不然如果我們不知道 我們自己推車
If we don't know, then we have to push the car ourselves
或是找幾個人在後面 一直推一直推
or find someone to help push all the way,
即使車有跑一點點
but even if the car moves a little,
不過不大好 大家都很累
everyone gets tired.
如果知道轉一個鑰匙 加一下油門
If we know, we turn the key, push on the gas,
它就一個小時衝幾百公里了
then the car will do hundreds of kilometers in an hour.
對不起，不要開那麼快
Sorry. You shouldn't drive that fast.
亂講
I was just joking!
我在美國時有一次開那麼快
I drove that fast once in the United States,
不過不要告訴警察喔！
but please don't tell the police.
我有急事的時候
It was an emergency.
一次而已
Only one time.
有一陣子很短的時間
For a very short while only.
我們本來是有 很偉大的能力在內邊
Originally we have great power within us.
我今天來這邊是要告訴各位 各位多麼偉大
Today I come to tell you how great you are.
我們是佛 我們是上帝的兒女
We are Buddha. We are God's children.
我們跟上帝同一體的
We are one with God.
我們不應該過一個
We shouldn't lead
很痛苦的、很缺少的 很不滿足的生活
a tortured, insufficient and unsatisfied life.
即使我們繼續留在這個世界 繼續工作
We stay in this world
繼續負家庭、國家的責任
and fulfill our duties to our family and country,
不過我們還是要再發現
but we have to redevelop the supreme power within us
我們最大的能力在裡面
to serve the world.
然後把它拉出來 服務這個世界
It's also very good to redevelop
即使用服務這個世界也更好
this power to serve the world,
不是說為了成佛
rather than just become a Buddha
自己天天上涅槃 快樂一個人而已
and go to heaven and enjoy being in Nirvana alone every day.
而且這個佛性 我們偉大的能力
This Buddha Nature, this supreme power,
內在上帝的能力 也會幫助我們的世界
God's power within us will help us, help the world,
幫助國家 幫助家庭的問題等等
help our country, our family, etc.
因為我們不用它
It's difficult to solve our problems
所以我們做事很困難
because we don't use this power.
解決問題都是用頭腦的 沒有用真正的主人
We use the mind instead of our inner Supreme Master.
如果大家都找到 自己天堂在內的話
If we had found our own heaven,
我們的世界 早就變成涅槃了
our world would have become Nirvana long ago.
根本不會有戰爭
There wouldn't be any wars,
根本不會有任何的 病痛、痛苦的方面
any sickness or pain.
我因為自己抓到了
I have already rediscovered
抓到了自己內邊 藏起來的那個佛性
my hidden inner power, the Buddha Nature.
自己知道抓到了之後 多快樂、多利益
I feel great benefit and joy.
所以不管路途遙遠
Regardless of the long distance,
回來告訴大家
I have come back here to tell you this.
不是說有什麼別的目的
I have no other purpose.

我們今天晚上就可以啦！
Tonight you can find your own Buddha Nature.
只要就各位有一點點時間
You need only spend a little time.
喜歡的話，我們可以把 所有的祕密告訴你們
If you like, I can tell you all the secrets.
而且根本不需要 替我們做些什麼
And you don't need to do anything for us,
只是替自己做而已
only for yourself.
天天找時間再跑回去涅槃 或是天堂那邊看看
Spend some time on going to heaven and Nirvana every day,
拿出來一些能量 拿出來一些智慧
get some energy,
然後回去這個身體
and bring some wisdom back to this physical body
用在親戚、朋友 國家、世界那方面
to serve our friends, relatives, country and the world.
幫助世界 幫助自己
Help this world. Help yourself.
而且我們五代 七代、九代等等
And 5, 7 and 9 generations of our ancestors
都會因為我們的這個能力 統統超生
will be liberated because of our inner power.
這個一定是這樣子
It is definitely so.
我在還沒印心以前
Before I received initiation,
聽到五六七代超生
when I heard something about 5,6,7 generations can be liberated,
我就馬上就衝
I would head straight for it.
我說：「一定要」
I would say, "That's what I want.
不管我能不能成佛
I don't care whether I will become Buddha.
如果七八代超生
As long as my ancestors can be liberated,
我就為他們而修行了
I will meditate for them."
這種孝順方法 我們如果不修
If we don't practice such a method of filial piety,
也是算愧疚祖宗
we should be ashamed.
不過因為它聽起來太好了
It sounds very good,
所以我們當然有時候 不會覺得
so sometimes we will doubt
真的有這種方法嗎？
whether there really is such a method.
當然！ 當然有啊！當然有啊！
Sure there is.
我們從那裏來 當然可以回那裏去啊
We come from there, so of course we can go back there.
怎麼不可能呢？
How can it be impossible?
你如果有一個房子
If you have a house and
你從家跑出來台北看看
you leave home and go to Taipei
或是到這邊體育館 來聽經
or come here to this stadium for the lecture,
等一下能不能回去啊？ 能嗎？
later can you go home? Can you?
嗯，知道路就可以啦！ 是不是？
You can! If you know the way home, right?
既然忘記路也沒關係
Even if you forget the way home, it doesn't matter.
有人帶路
Someone will guide you.
有計程車可以知道
The taxi driver or
或是有別人知道路 可以帶領我們
someone else who knows the way may bring us home.
像我來這邊的時候 我也不知道路嘛！
Like me, I don't know the way here,
就找計程車啊！
so I take a taxi.
他們常跑來跑去跑來跑去 他們知道路很清楚
They drive around and know the road very well.
幾百塊就到了
With only a few hundred dollars we reach our destination.
我們回去佛土 連一毛也不用花
We don't need to spend any money to go back to Buddha's land
因為在這裡 馬上在這裡
because it is right here.
禪宗都有說：
It is said in Zen,
天堂跟世界只有一髮之隔
Heaven and earth are only a hair apart.
差別只在於此
That's the difference.
真的是這樣子
It's true. It's true.
我們一往外面 就會在這個外面世界
If we pay our attention outside, we will be in this material world.
做什麼、玩什麼、想什麼 快樂什麼、痛苦什麼
Working! Playing! Thinking! Feeling happy! Feeling sad!
我們一往內邊 我們就在天堂、在涅槃裏了
If we pay our attention inside, we will be in heaven, in Nirvana.
就是這樣
That's it.
就是這麼簡單
It's that simple.
不過因為大家都忘記了
Everybody has forgotten.
好久沒有弄了
We haven't practiced it for a long time.
從小就從天堂下來
We came down from heaven.
長大以後就匆匆忙忙
When we grow up,
被這個世界 綁住太緊、忙得太多
we are bound to this material world.
所以沒辦法記得
We are too busy, so we can't remember heaven.
如果記得的話 就馬上可以知道了
If we recall it again, we may realize it immediately.
天堂、世界 天堂、世界
Heaven, earth. Heaven, earth.
就這樣，很快
It's very quick.
注意力反過來
We need only turn our attention inward.
反聞聞自性
Listen inwardly to your Inner Nature,
就可以知道自己的佛性了
then you will find your own Buddha Nature.
佛性不是像有一種東西 我們可以摸、可以抓
Buddha Nature is not something we can touch or grasp,
而是我們自己 一種無所不在的
but a kind of omnipresent,
無所不能的這種品質
omnipotent quality.
我們本來就是這樣
We are like this originally.
我們來這個世界 為了要反照
We came to this world to change it,
要自己再幫助世界 再把宇宙弄多樣出來
to help this world and add variety to the universe.
不然我們整天在涅槃 也沒什麼多事幹
Otherwise we would be in Nirvana all day with not much to do.
所以來這邊玩一玩
That is why we come here to play and have fun.
不過玩太多 忘記回家也不好
It's not good to play too much and forget to go home.
時間到了要準備回家
Time is up. We should get ready to go home.
準備回家要坐車 要找車等等
To go home we need a car.
車子已經找好了
Once the car is found,
要上車就走了
you have to get in and be on your way.
所以今天如果大家有空 要記得自己是佛的話
Today if you are free and want to remember you are Buddha,
我們可以說明，這很快
I can explain it to you very quickly.
有兩種三種，兩種啦
There are 2 methods.
意思說 有一…
I mean...
唉呀，我中文不行 不大順
I cannot speak Chinese very smoothly.
有一些人要完全了解 自己的內心
For those who want to completely understand their own nature
要完全放下世界
and renounce this material world...
不是放下啦！
I don't mean renounce,
意思說 對世界沒有什麼意思啦！
just not care so much about it.
只想完全回家 很快地回家
Those who want to go home quickly
這個是要學 要打坐久一點
need to learn and practice longer,
要天天打坐久一點 要學習詳細一點
need to learn more thoroughly and meditate longer every day
那個要留下來一兩個小時 我們才全部說出來
and have to stay here one or two hours to learn the details.
說出來了以後
After we tell you the details
各位每天都可以 在家自己做
you can practice at home by yourselves
不需要我再來了
and there is no need for me to come here again.
不過如果剛開始 有困難的話
In the beginning, if you have any questions or problem,
可以在內邊跟我說
you may contact me inwardly.
我在內邊也會幫助 開始的時候
I will help you inwardly as well in the beginning.
如果在內邊還怕不夠
If you feel this is not strong enough,
也可以寫信 問幾個問題
you may write me a letter and ask your questions.
這剛開始的時候而已
This is in the beginning.
後來自己走了 不用老師
Later on you may walk by yourself. You won't need a teacher
因為我們都是佛的
because we are all Buddha.
沒有人能教我們什麼
No one can teach us anything.
佛性自己出來了以後 上帝內邊起來的時候
Once the Buddha Nature is developed, the inner power awakens
祂自己會了解 沒有人是祂的老師
and he will know that nobody can be his teacher.
祂是本人
He is the Real Self.
祂是佛
He is Buddha.
祂是上帝
He is God.
還有另外一個方法
Another method is available for those
就是因為不想吃素
who don't want to be vegetarians,
吃素不方便
or those who may find it inconvenient to keep a daily vegetarian diet.
我們就有一種叫方便法
We call it the Convenient Method.
就是不用天天吃素
There's no need to be vegetarian every day
也不用打坐那麼久 像兩個半小時等等
nor to meditate 2 and a half hours.
打坐大概半個小時 自己救自己
Meditate only half an hour daily to save yourself.
印心的就五六七代超生
For the initiated people, 5,6,7 generations of their ancestors will be liberated.
方便法一個人可以超生
For the Convenient Method only one person can be liberated.
不過也是很了不起了
But it is also great.
天天打坐一點點這樣子
Meditate a little every day
就會很快地 幾天就覺得自己不一樣了
and you will feel you are different after a few days.
自己變成聰明 更聰明、更伶俐
You will become more clever, smarter, more loving,
更有愛心 更有耐心
more compassionate and more thoughtful.
什麼事都會想得 更快、更衝
We will be more sharp and quick thinking.
什麼問題都可以解決
All problems will be solved more quickly than before

while I am here,
可以眼睛閉起來
you may close your eyes and
往這邊 注意力往這邊
focus your attention here.
從這邊有一個眼睛
There is an eye here.
我們說佛眼 或是智慧眼、第三眼
We call it Buddha eye, wisdom eye or the third eye.
看到中心前面來
Look at the center front.
有什麼就看到什麼
Just look at what you have before you.
裡面會很亮
Sometimes it will be very bright inside,
跟幾千個太陽 有的時候
like thousands of suns.
有時候會看到佛祖 佛土、耶穌
Sometimes we can see Buddha, Buddha's land, Jesus
有時候看到別的聖人等等
and other saints.
你們可以試看看 往裡面馬上就看到佛性了
You may try to look inwardly and see your Buddha Nature.
佛性不是說什麼東西 我們可以講出來
Buddha Nature is not something we can talk about.
就是很亮很亮
It is very bright. Very bright.
有時候也可以聽到佛講經
Sometimes we can hear Buddha giving lectures.
佛講經不是說用世界的語言
Buddha doesn't give lectures in human language.
祂就用那種美麗音樂一樣
It is just like beautiful music
讓我們靈魂輕鬆 飄飄快樂
which calms and elevates the soul.
然後我們為了聽這些 無言的經典
When we listen to this wordless teaching,
會更聰明、更快樂 越來越從容自在
we will become wiser, happier, freer.

祂就是上帝內邊的佛性啦
That is Buddha Nature.
就是你們本人的老師
That is your own teacher.
