Yesterday I watched the news for a little while.

I ran out of the bathroom to catch the final part.

It said, "Supreme Master Ching Hai is returning home to Formosa."

I heard it and was touched.

It seems like everyone treats me like family.

If we want to know that we are one,

we want to truly know it and

not just hear it from someone or feel it,

we have to really know it.

If you want to really know it, it's not difficult.

Buddha once said,

Put down the butcher's knife and become Buddha in an instant.
¤£¬O»¡§Ú­ÌÀ³¸Óµ¥¨ì ©ñ¤U±O¤M¤~¥i¥H¦¨¦ò
It doesn't mean that, we should wait until we put down the knife to become Buddha.
§Ú­Ì¤£¥Î
We don't have to wait for that.
§Ú­Ì¥u­n¤Ï¹L¨Ó ¡y¤Ï»D»D¦Û©Ê¡z
We only have to turn inward and "listen inwardly to our Inner Nature,"

then we will find our own Buddha Nature in an instant.

We read many scriptures and know we should "listen inwardly to our Inner Nature,
´N¤£ª¾¹D«ç»ò¡y¤Ï»D¡z ¬°¤°»ò­n¡y¤Ï»D¡z¡H
but we don't know how and why.
¬°¤°»ò¤£»¡¡y¤Ï¬Ý¡z
Why don't we say 'look' inwardly

or 'touch' or 'feel' inwardly?

Why do we say 'listen' inwardly?
¦]¬°¯u¥¿ªº§Ú­Ì ¥i¥H»D¨ì
Because we can really listen,
»D¨ì¤£¬O»¡¥Î¦Õ¦·»Dªº ¦Ó¥B¥Î¦Û¤vªº¤º¤ß
not with our ears, but with our inner heart.

We can listen inwardly to our Inner Nature.

But why do we say that?
¦]¬°·|¦³­µ¼Ö
Because there is music.

There is Buddha's scripture and Buddha's teaching.
·|¦³¤º¦bªº¡B¤Ñ¤Wªº ¤@ºØ¹³­µ¼Ö¤@¼Ë¡A¨º»ò¬üÄR
There is inner heavenly music. So beautiful!
´N¬O³oºØ­µ¼Ö §Ú­Ì¤£»Ý­n¥~ªíªº¼Ö¾¹
We don't need material musical instruments to play this music.
¹³¦U¦ì­è¤~¦³ªY½à
Just now you all enjoyed the performance of
§Ú­Ì¦P­×ÁÙ¦³­µ¼Ö®a ¤@°_¦X«µ¡B¦X°Û
our disciples and the musicians who sang and played together.
³o­Ó¥~ªíªº­µ¼Ö
This external music
§Ú­ÌÀ³¸Ó¥Î¼Ö¾¹ ¤~¯à°÷§Ë¥X¨ÓÁn­µ
needs material musical instruments.
´N¬O¤ºÃä ·í§Ú­Ì»D¨ì¦Û¤v¤º¤ßªº®É­Ô
But if we want to listen to the inner music,
´N¤£¥Î¼Ö¾¹
there is no need for these material musical instruments.
¦Ó¥BÁn­µ§ó¬üÄR¡B§ó¶ø§®
The sound is more beautiful and wonderful.
µM«áÅý§Ú­ÌªºÆF»î ´NÄÆ¡KÄÆ¡KÄÆ¡KÄÆ¡K
It elevates our soul.
°ª¿³§Ö¼Ö¦^¨Ó¥»¤g ¹³¦ò¤g©Î¬O¤Ñ°ó
Then we can happily go back to Buddha's land or heaven.
©Ò¥H¦ò¯ª¤~»¡ ­n¤Ï»D»D¦Û©Ê
That's why Buddha said we have to listen to our Inner Nature.
§Ú­Ìªº¦Û©Ê¤£¬O»¡¤@Áû¤ß ¤]¤£¬O»¡¤@ºØ¤°»ò«~½è
Our nature is not this heart, it's not a kind of quality.
´N¬O¤@ºØ¦Û¥Ñ¦Û¦b
It's a free nature,
«D±`¦³´¼¼z
very wise,
«D±`°ª¶Q «D±`°¶¤j
very noble, very great,
¾ã­Ó¦t©z³£¥i¥H¥]§tªº
and accommodates the whole universe.
³o­Ó´N¬O§Ú­Ìªº¦Û©Ê
This is our own Inner Nature.
§Ú­Ì§¤³o¼Ë¤l ¬Ý°_¨Ó¹³¤Z¤Òªº¤H¤@¼Ë
We sit like this, and look like ordinary people,
´N¬O§Ú­Ì²´·ú¤@³¬°_¨Ó
but once we close our eyes
ª¾¹D¦b¨º¸Ì»D¦ò©Êªº®É­Ô
and know how to listen to our Inner Nature,
§Ú­Ì°¨¤W¥i¥H»D¨ì ³o­Ó¦ò©Ê
then we can listen to this Inner Nature immediately.
©Ò¥HÄÀ­{¦È¥§¦ò¤~»¡¡G ¡y§Ú­Ì³£¦³¦ò©Ê¡z
So Sakyamuni Buddha said, "Everybody has Buddha Nature."
­C¿q¤]»¡¡G ¡y¤Ñ°ó¬O¦b§A¤ºÃä¡z
Jesus also said, "The kingdom of God is within you."
¬O¤W«Ò¦í¦b §Ú­Ì³o­Ó¦x¼q¸Ì­±
God dwells in this temple.
¬JµM§Ú­Ì³£¬O³o¼Ë¤lÅ¥»¡
Even though we all hear that,
¤£¹L¦pªG§Ú­Ì¨S¦³ ¯u¥¿ªº³oºØÅéÅ窺¸Ü
without real experiences
§Ú­Ìªº¥Í¬¡ ÁÙ¬O°¨°¨ªêªê³o¼Ë¤l¹L¥h
our life is just mediocre,
¨S¦³§ïÅÜ
with no changes.
¨S¦³§ó¼W¥[ªº´¼¼z ¨S¦³§ó¼W¥[ªº¯à¤O
We don't develop our wisdom, we don't better our ability,
¨S¦³¥i¥H·Q¨ì«Ü¦h ¶ø§®ªº¤èªk
and we can't find a better way
¥i¥H³B²z§Ú­Ì®a®xªº ÁÙ¦³ªÀ·|ªº¡B¥|©P³òªº
to solve our family, social
«Ü¦hºØºØªº°ÝÃD
and various problems.
¦b¸t¸g¦³»¡¡G
The Bible says, "Seek you first the Kingdom of God
§Ú­Ì¥ý§ä¨ì¤Ñ°ê µM«á©Ò¦³ªF¦è³£·|¨Óµ¹§Ú­Ì
and all other things shall be added unto you."
ÄÀ­{¦È¥§¦ò¤]¦³»¡
And Sakyamuni Buddha said,
§Ú­Ì§ä¨ì¦ò©Ê¤F¥H«á
Find your Buddha Nature first.
§Y¨Ï§Ú­Ìªº¤Z¤Òªº¥Í¬¡
Even if we are lay people, our life will become happier
¤]·|§ó¼W¥[§Ö¼Ö¡B§ó¦¨¥\
and more successful and our material lives
³sª«½èªº¤è­±¤]·|§ó¿³ºa
will be more prosperous.
¤£¬O¦]¬°§Ú­Ì§ä¦ò©Ê
The purpose of finding our Buddha Nature
¬°¤F­n¥Í¬¡µÎªA
is not to seek a more comfortable life.
¤£¹L§Ú­Ì¤]·| «ÜµÎªA¡B«Ü§Ö¼Ö
After finding our Buddha Nature, we will feel comfortable and happy.
¦]¬°¦ò©Ê§ä¨ì¤F¥H«á ¥ô¦ó©Ò¦³ªº³£·Ó«G
Everything will be bright.
§Ú­Ìªº¤~µØ §Ú­Ìªº¥H«e©Ò¦³§Ñ°Oªº¤~µØ
All our forgotten latent talents,
§Ú­Ìªº¤w¸gºÎ¯vªº´¼¼z
our sleeping wisdom,
§Ú­Ì¦n¤[¤£ª¾¹D¦³ªº¯à¤O
forgotten ability,
²Î²Î¥þ³¡³£·|©M¦ò©Ê ¤@°_°_¨Ó¡B¤@°_µo®i
everything will develop together with our Buddha Nature.
§Ú­ÌÅܦ¨¤@­Ó¤£¦Pªº¤H
Then we change into another person.

From that time we are not ordinary people anymore

because originally we are not ordinary people.

When we enter this body, we call ourselves human.

But before we entered this body,
§Ú­Ì¬O½Ö©O¡H
what were we?
µM«á§Ú­Ì¥X¥h¡BÂ÷¶} ³o­Ó¨­Å骺®É­Ô
And after we leave this flesh body,
§Ú­Ì¤S¬O½Ö¡H
what will we be?
³o¼Ë¤l°Ý¤@°Ý ´Nª¾¹D§Ú­Ì¥»¨Ó´N¤£¬O¤Z¤Ò
As we ask this question we know we are not ordinary people.
´N¬O¦]¬°¶i¥h ³o­Ó¦×Åé¤F¥H«á
It is just because after entering this fleshly body,
§Ú­Ì©Ò¦³ªº´¼¼z ©Ò¦³ªº§Ö¼Öªº
we forget all our wisdom, all our happiness
©Ò¦³ªº¶W¶Vªº¯à¤O ³£³Q§Ñ°O¤F
and our supreme power.
§Ú­Ì§Ñ°O ¦]¬°§Ú­Ì³£¬O¤Ó¦£
We are too busy
¤Ó¦£¬ÝªF¬Ý¦è ¬Ý©Ò¦³ªº¥@¬ÉªºÅܤÆ
looking at the changes in this material world.
ÁÙ¦³³Q¤Ñ¤Ñ¥Í¬¡ ¥Í¦s¥²¶·­nªº¸j¦í§Ú­Ì
We are bound by our daily obligations,
Åý§Ú­Ì¨­Åé¡Bºë¯««Ü¯h­Â
so our body and spirit feel exhausted.
¬°¤F­n¥Í¦s
We are preoccupied with our material needs
¬°¤F­n¦³¨¬°÷¶ºµæ ¨¬°÷¦çªA
such as food and clothing.
³o­Ó¤£¬O§Ú­Ì¨Ó³oÃä ¯u¥¿ªº¥Øªº
This is not the purpose of our coming to this world.
¤£¹L³o­Ó¥@¬É ³o­Ó¥@¬É¬JµM¬O¤Û·Q
This world is but an illusion
¤£¹L¥¦«Ü¼F®`
which is very powerful.
¥¦¥i¥H§â§Ú­Ì¥þ³¡ªº ºë¯«¡BÅé¤O¡Bª`·N¤O
It exhausts all our energy
§ì¦í¦b³o¸Ì
and grabs our attention
³s§Ú­Ì¥»¨Ó´N¬O¦ò ¯àÅý§Ú­Ì²Î²Î¤@°®¤G²b§Ñ°O
so that we completely forget we are originally Buddha.
¬JµM§Ú­Ì¤Ñ¤Ñ¦³¬Ý¦ò¸g»¡
We read Buddha's scriptures every day and they say
§Ú­Ì³£¦³¦ò©Ê
we all have Buddha Nature.
ÄÀ­{¦È¥§¦ò¤]»¡ Í¢¸ò§Ú­Ì¥­µ¥
And Sakyamuni Buddha said, "He and we are equal."
Í¢¬O¦ò¤w¸g¦¨¤F §Ú­Ì¬O·í¨Óªº¦ò¥i¥H¦¨
He's already become Buddha, and so will we.
Í¢¤]»¡©Ò¦³²³¥Í ¸òÍ¢¤@¼Ë¦³¦ò©Ê
He said all beings have the Buddha Nature like Himself.
¬°¤°»ò¤£ª¾¹D Í¢¦Û¤v¤]°Ý¦Û¤v
He also asked Himself why the beings didn't realize this.
¦]¬°³o­ÓÅ]¤ý ³o­Ó¥@¬Éªº¤Û·Q
Because the illusion of this Maya world
¯uªº¤Ó¡K¤Ó¶ø§®¤F
is really great.
Åý§Ú­Ì§¹¥þ¡B¤@ÂIÂI ³£¤£°O±o§Ú­Ì¬O½Ö
It makes us completely forget who we are.
¤£°O±o¤Ñ°óªº®a¶m ¤£°O±o¦ò¤g
We forget heaven, our homeland, the Buddha's land.
¤£¹L§Ú­Ì­n°O±oªº¸Ü ÁÙ¦n«Ü²³æ¡A«Ü²³æ
But it's simple to recall it. Very simple!

I often say
³o»ò²³æ ¸ò³o°¦¤â½¹L¨Ó¦Ó¤w
it is as simple as turning your hand over,

or as looking from the front to the back.

It's that simple.

But again, it's not simple.

Not simple.

Because we often look outside into the material world

and get used to it

so it's difficult for us to believe we are Buddha.
µM«áÅ¥»¡¬O¤Ñ°ó¡B¦ò¤g
We hear something about heaven, Buddha's land,
¦ò¦b¤ß¡B¤W«Ò¦b¤º
about Buddha in our heart, and God within us.
¤£¹LÅ¥»¡¬OÅ¥»¡¦Ó¤w
This we hear only.
©ú¤ÑÁÙ¬O¤@¼Ë ¥^¥^¦£¦£¹L¤@­Ó¤Z¤Òªº¥Í¬¡
Tomorrow we carry on with the hustle-bustle of our ordinary life.

It's also OK.
¤£¹L¦º¤`ªº®É­Ô ¨S¦³¤H±a¸ô
But when we die, there is no one to guide us
¤£ª¾¹D¥h¨º¸Ì ÆF»î¤]¬O«Üµh­W
and we don't know where to go; then our soul will feel tortured.
¦b¥@ªº®É­Ô¤Ó¥^¥^¦£¦£ ¬°¤F¨­Åé
While living we are too busy
®ö¶O«Ü¦h®É¶¡ ªá¤F«Ü¦hºë¯«©MÅé¤O
spending too much time and energy on our physical body.
¨S¦³¤@­Ó²z·Q ¨S¦³¨º­Ó¸É¥Rªº¯à¶q
We have no spiritual ideal or rechargeable energy,
©Ò¥H¨­Åé¡Bºë¯«¤]¬O«Üµh­W
so our body and mind suffer.
¤£¬O»¡§Ú­Ì­n¹L¤@­Ó ´¶³qªº¡B²³æªº¥Í¬¡¤]¤£¦n
I'm not saying it's no good to have a simple and ordinary life.

It's good! It's good!
¤£¹L¡A§Ú­Ì¤£¬O¹L¤@­Ó ²³æªº¥Í¬¡¦Ó¤w´N°÷¦n¤F
But it's not enough to lead a simple life,
¦]¬°§Ú­Ì¤Óµh­W
because we are too tormented.
¦pªG¨S¦³§ä¨ì¦Û¤v ¯u¥¿ªº¥»¨Ó­±¥Øªº¸Ü
If we can't find our true self,
¤£ºÞ°µ¤°»ò ¤£ºÞ¾Ö¦³¦h¤Ö
no matter what we do or have,
¤£·|§¹¥þ§Ö¼Ö ¤£·|¥Ã«íı±oº¡¨¬
we will never feel completely happy or contented.
³o¬O¦]¬°§Ú­Ì§â°²§Ë¦¨¯uªº
This is because we mistake the false for the real.
§Ú­Ì§â³o­Ó¤Û·Qªº¥@¬É
We take this illusionary world
·í¦¨¤@­Ó°ß¤@ªº ¤@­Ó¤£¥i¨S¦³ªº¥@¬É
as the one and only.
µM«á§Ú­Ì¨Ì¾a¥¦
And then we rely on it,
§Ú­Ì¸òµÛ¥¦¨« ÀH¥¦ªº¨º­Ó­n¨D
follow it and fulfill its demands.
§Ú­Ìªº¨­Åé¡Bºë¯««Ü¯h­Â
Our mind and body are exhausted,
¤]¸Ë¤£¤F¤°»ò¦h¤Ö
so we can't recharge ourselves with much energy.
§Y¨Ï¬°¤F¨­Åé ¤]¦³®É­Ô¤£°÷
Sometimes it's even not enough for our body.

We do things upside down
§Ú­Ì§Ñ°O¤F
because we have forgotten our own nature.

If we want to drive, we should know where to put key to get it started,

where the gas pedal and...

We are like this originally.

We came to this world to change it,

to help this world and add variety to the universe.

Otherwise we would be in Nirvana all day with not much to do.
